15 years ago I became a mother

It wasn’t something I would have planned for my life at the ripe old age of 16, but it was God’s plan. In spite of our sin and selfishness, He entrusted us with a little baby boy who we named Austin William. And our life as a family began.

I had no idea what it meant to be a mother. I had what seemed like a thousand people telling me what they thought being a good mommy meant and like a good student I soaked up every piece of advice and watched others interact with their children. And I just kind of went along with it. For years. After all, I was so young and immature and every one else around me wasn’t. I was just going through the motions and hoping and praying that something turned out right. And I was dying on the inside. We were struggling with Austin and no one seemed to care. We just needed to love him more and learn how to be better parents. It was as if we had to continue proving that we were even supposed to be parents before anyone would listen to the fact that we were really having a hard time with him.

Over the years, I have learned what it means to be a mother. But it hasn’t been from reading the latest parenting book, attending a class, or watching someone else be super-mom.

God has used the past 15 years of ups and downs to show me what being a mom is really about. He has been right here helping me to grow up right alongside my son. Being a good mom is not about making sure my kids look good on the outside and perform for others. It’s not even about making sure they are well fed, dressed, go to church, have good manners and homeschooled. Those things are fine and would even describe my children (most of the time) but if that’s all it’s about, then I have failed.

It’s about making mistakes and asking forgiveness. Being there for my kids no matter what. Advocating for them when no one else will. Being confident that no one knows them better than we do. Loving them even when I don’t feel it and loving them enough to say NO. Not measuring them up to any standard but God’s. Praying for them fervently.  Pointing them to their need for Christ always.

I have learned much more from being a mom than my kids will ever learn from me. Now that I am 31 (and so much older and wiser- ha ha) my eyes are being opened to what God requires of me as His child and I am slowly seeing that He is all sufficient and that He is the only one I need to complete this task. I admit that I get overwhelmed and very tired of being a mom. Especially a mom to a child with some special needs. It is exhausting most days and frustrating on the rest. But that is all part of the divine plan. If it were easy, then I would have no need for Christ would I? His grace is sufficient for me and His power made perfect in my weakness. I truly have to depend on the Lord each and every day. And when I don’t… well, you can just imagine how it goes.

My dear Austin,

I can’t believe it has been 15 years since that early morning when we first held you in our arms. After a hard pregnancy and days of labor, you had finally arrived and captured everyone’s hearts. I remember looking at your sweet face and wondering what kind of boy and man you would grow up to be. I remember finally getting a chance to be alone with you and daddy. The tears started coming as the reality set in that we were now your parents and we were responsible for this tiny little life that we held in our arms. We were scared, but we knew that the Lord would be with us. When we named you Austin, we weren’t as into the meaning of names as we are now and so we picked it because we liked the name. Now as I look at the meaning of your name I smile. Austin: magnificent; royal; great; helpful. So fitting for you. And of course the name William is passed on from your great-grandpa to your papa to your daddy and then to you. I treasure the picture we have with the 4 generations of “Williams” because it is a reminder of the godly heritage that you come from. A truly “royal” line of men. J

Over the years, we have had many ups and downs and it has not always been easy. I am grateful that God gave us you because He has taught Dad and I so much by being your parents. I am sorry that we have not been the best parents and we make lots of mistakes, but thanks for being a son who loves us in spite of all of that. I love you and want to be the mom that God wants me to be for you and I pray that you will continue to have patience as I figure that out!

You are so big now- towering over your short mom for a few years already- and it is hard to believe that I once held you in my arms while I fed you and sang to you. I want you to know that I have prayed for you to grow up to be a godly man who fears the Lord like your daddy. It is now up to you to make the decision to follow Christ with your life. We still have a couple more years left with you here, but you are now old enough to make a lot more choices on your own without us right by your side. In only one year you will be old enough to drive- yikes! We pray that in every situation you will choose Christ and glorify Him, but we want you to know that even when you fail and mess up- we are here. We love you and nothing you do will ever change that. We follow the example of Jesus, who loved us enough to sacrifice everything for us… He loved us when we were completely sinful, broken, and messed up. How can we claim to know Him and not do the same?

I love you Austin and I pray that this year of your life would be the best yet. Full of growth and change and deeper relationships. I pray that our relationship as your parents would grow stronger, more trusting, and closer together and not further apart. You are and will always be our first born son and we are grateful to God for the gift that you are.

Love,
Mom

The power of a simple gift: The Shoebox Packing Party!

Every year for almost as long as we have been married, our family has put together shoeboxes for children in need in participation with Operation Christmas Child. Just about everyone we know participates too, so I am sure that this ministry is not new to you either. We have always loved the traditions surrounding the upcoming Christmas season and the collection of the boxes is always before Thanksgiving so it is a wonderful way to begin the holidays as we mean to end- by giving and remembering those in need. Every year we go out shopping together and every member of our family has a specific age child to buy for- it is so funny how we pick the same age and gender every time. We enjoy doing this as a family and usually end up filling maybe 5 or 6 boxes full.

Until this year.

This year was a little different.

It all started a few weeks ago on Orphan Sunday. Randy and I had brought resources to church and wore our cool shirts to raise awareness and there was a very moving video shown at church about Operation Christmas Child. We had friends over for lunch and watched the Cry of the Orphan dvd and our kids were listening in. It had already been a great day.
But it was about to get even better.
Well, later on one of our boys came in from playing outside to tell us about a conversation he had with one of the neighbor kids. I guess he asked the boy if he knew that today was Orphan Sunday. (I love that he thought it was like a holiday or something!) The kid said, "No, I don't go to church remember?!" And I guess our son proceeded to tell him all about all the orphans in the world, then asked him why he didn't go to church and then shared with him about Christ! Then the boy finally asked "so is that why you're homeschooled?" (of course I am wondering what in the world he said to him after that!) So Jensen tells him "Well I am homeschooled because they don't teach the TRUTH in school and I can learn the TRUTH at home! Do you know the TRUTH?" Totally his own words and idea of why he gets to do school at home!
Wow! This is our "shy" one who is saying this- the Lord is truly giving him BOLDNESS for Him and it is amazing to see!
So after we talked about this conversation with the neighbor, we knew the Lord didn't want it to stop there. We started thinking and praying about an opportunity to reach more of the neighbor kids and all of a sudden it hit us...
The SHOEBOXES!

So we decided to have a shoebox packing party!

We went out as a family like usual to do our shopping, but instead of buying to fill up 5 or 6 boxes, we got enough to fill 20 shoeboxes!!! Crazy!

We went door to door of the houses with kids in our neighborhood and asked their parents if it was ok if they helped to put gifts together to give to a child in need somewhere else in the world. The amazing part about it was that even the families who are of a totally different religion were very much for the idea. The fact that every parent wants their child to care about someone other than themselves must be universal. And we were excited that it was a total open door to share about WHY we do this in the first place!

We set up a few tables in our front yard (to make it less intimidating than coming into the house if they didn't know us well) and we just piled on the STUFF for the boxes! There was so much fun stuff: toys, games, crayons, hair stuff, and of course CANDY, as well as all the practical things like socks, soap and toothbrushes. Just getting the tables ready made me giddy for what the Lord was going to do! :)

Slowly the kids came and got instructions on how to fill their boxes and then got to work!

Some came from non-Christian homes and others were believers. It was awesome to see the kids working together for a common purpose and greater cause!

Everyone was happy and having fun.
Well almost everyone.

Elliana wasn't feeling very good that day, but we managed to get through it with the help of a cookie or two. There weren't many left...

We had every kid write a letter to include in their shoebox

and I took a picture of each of them holding their box.

I made two copies of each picture and one got sent with the shoebox gift and the other we will give to the kids to remind them of what they did and to pray for the child who will receive it.

Although it was only a small thing, we pray that seeds were planted and that the Lord would continue to use our family to reach the nations. Both right here in our neighborhood and on the other side of the world. I am so thankful for the way He is working in my kids' hearts despite all of our failures as parents. And there are many!

20 boxes filled! Yay!

***Thank you to those of you who left comments after the last post. Your words meant so much. We are still seeking the Lord for how to proceed with the next steps to grow our family. We know there are more children meant to join our family, we are just a bit confused and exhausted at the moment. Thank you for praying for us and for the millions of orphans who are waiting...

And they're off!

All 4 of my guys left today. For a week. On a man's trip.
Aren't they so handsome? Yes, I miss them already! :-)

My guys are headed on a train trip up north to Portland and then Seattle and then back home again next Tuesday. What will they do on their trip you ask? Well, I don't exactly know. All I know is there will be some fun sights to take in, some man-food to be eaten, and a lot of father-son bonding taking place. That is the blessing of having 3 sons so close in age- it makes for great opportunities to have some of that guy-time with the best dad in the world. Randy has plans for a special time of discipleship and training during this trip and I am so proud of him for just planning it and making it a priority. He has been looking forward to getting away with them and having fun and being able to discuss some of the things they have been reading about becoming men more in depth. The boys were pretty excited about it too!

And what about the girls? Well, little miss Elliana thought she should be allowed to go too! Trying to hop right into the truck...
Sorry baby, this trip is for BOYS ONLY.

She was NOT happy about that at all.

The girls (as in Elliana and I) are actually STILL recovering from our rough weekend. She was still very sick yesterday and seems to be recovering today, and I seem to have gotten an infection at the extraction site which would explain why I'm still in so much pain, but I've got meds to help clear that up soon. So after we are all well, we have small plans to go play at the park, swim at grandma's, go to the zoo, have the girl cousins and auntie over for a girl's night, and relax here at home. I have a list a mile long of projects that need to be done around here, but who knows what will realistically get accomplished before the week is over!
Of course she wanted to join in on the picture too! I know she is going to miss her da-da and bubbas this week!

And I am too!!!

"My son, keep your father's commands and do not forsake your mother's teaching.

Bind them upon your heart forever; fasten them around your neck.

When you walk, they will guide you; when you sleep, they will watch over you; when you awake, they will speak to you.

For these commands are a lamp, this teaching is a light,
and the corrections of discipline are the way to life..."

Just in case you didn't know...

I have 3 boys!
And 2 of them are playing baseball this season. Totalling 5 days/week.
Which makes for an extememely busy few months.
It has been so crazy that there is hardly time for much else.
Well, I guess if the adoption wasn't on my mind so much it wouldn't seem so crazy huh!

Oh well, it's only for a season. And by the next sport season, the boys will have a little cheerleader in the stands! Watch out!

Goofy boys!!!

Now that Jensen is in school, the other 2 boys are getting more of a chance to bond together than before. Usually it is Jensen and Nathan and Austin usually plays something different, but lately him amd Nathan have been having fun together.
One of the things they love doing is dressing up in goofy hats (yes. they still do that) and acting silly. And this is the only time they actually ASK me to take their pictures! I have yet to get them together, but here are a few randoms from the past few weeks...

I have MANY more from the past but I have to find them, so I'll leave those for another day!

Just hanging/ climbing around

Since Jensen and Nathan are both starting up baseball this week, we decided to let Austin try something different and fun for exercise... climbing! This is not something he had ever really done before but he is learning fast and loving it! I actually believe it is good therapy for him. We got him a pass for a couple of months to try while his brothers are busy with baseball and part of the deal is he gets two guests each month. So on Saturday since it was raining and we didn't have much else to do, we all went down to Yosemite fitness and used those two passes and let the 3 boys climb and climb and climb! They had a good time and got some energy out and it was a fun way to kill a few hours on a rainy day. I only got a few pictures and they aren't all that great again with my non low light lens on my camera (see post below).

Look how high that seems- the picture actually makes it look bigger than it really was! Go Jensen...

Austin loves having something to be proud of and that he accomplished. Last night he was so excited because he got to the top of one of the hard ones.

Concentrating on trying to make it to the top

Our boys have always been climbers. It started when they would climb up on the table, then climbing trees, now pretty much anywhere they can. It's fun now to have someplace to take them where they can really climb, and not get in trouble for it!

I can't believe he's 12

Where has the time gone?

He has grown so much since then...

Happy 12th Birthday Austin.
